Mapping guide
Writing a mapping
One rule per line, spelling on the left and IPA on the right:
// Tlag vowels aa = ɑ a = æ
=or:separates the two sides. Surrounding spaces are ignored.- Both sides can be more than one character:
ts = tsʼ,tl = ʈɭ˔. - Matching is greedy and longest-first, so
aawins overawithout you ordering anything. Brackets, dots and stress marks with no rule pass through unchanged. // comment: lines starting with two slashes are ignored.
Variants and the reverse direction
Separate accepted variants with /:
tl = ʈɭ˔ / tɬ
- Spelling to IPA always writes the first variant (
tlbecomesʈɭ˔). - IPA to spelling accepts any variant, so both
ʈɭ˔andtɬbecometl. - Use this for tie bars and free variation:
b = b̪͡v / b̪vreads both, writes the tied one. - If two spellings claim the same IPA, the longest spelling wins going backwards, and the page warns you.
The Tlag preset
The Tlag preset covers the full inventory from the Tlag phonology: g is /ŋ/, v is /ə/, aa is /ɑ/, ejectives p t k ts carry /ʼ/, and the dictionary's narrow transcriptions are accepted on the way back — tie bars (b̪͡v p̪͡f ʈ͡ɭ˔ t͡s), plain neighbours (s in [sʈ]), and nasalised vowels (ə̃ ɑ̃).
Try it: type aabaakaatl in the spelling box and you should get something close to the dictionary's [ɑb̪͡vɑkʼɑʈ͡ɭ˔] (dots and brackets are yours to add).
Sharing and deep links
Every change updates the address bar. Copy the link and anyone who opens it sees your exact mapping, both texts, and options.
If you build links by hand, the parameters are m (mapping), o (spelling text), i (IPA text), from (o or i, whichever was edited last), and fold (1 or 0 for ignore-case). Anything you leave out falls back to the Tlag preset.
